The IV Sketchbooks Series is Rick's love letter to Isla Vista — its homes, its businesses, its blocks, the places where generations of students have partied, grown up, and moved on. Painted one watercolor at a time, this series captures the true essence of IV: not just how it looks, but how it feels to live here.
Rick has watched this town shift beneath his brush for decades. Houses creep a little closer to the cliffs each year. Businesses pack up and reopen somewhere new. New apartment buildings rise where old ones used to stand. And every fall, a new wave of students arrives, only to move on a few years later — the endless cycle of Isla Vista.
Through it all, one thing hasn't changed: Rick is still here. While the town around him keeps turning over, he's remained a constant — a true Isla Vista resident, watching, painting, and preserving the town's story one sketch at a time.
